Frequently asked questions

What should an insurance renewal tracker include?
At minimum: the policy name, insurance type, policy number, carrier, effective date, and expiration date. A genuinely useful tracker also records the agent or broker and their contact information, the named insured, the annual premium, whether the policy renews automatically, and the cancellation notice period — that last one determines how early you must act if you plan to switch carriers. Our template includes all of these columns plus a renewal preparation date, policy status, document location, and notes.
How early should a business review its insurance policies?
Sixty to ninety days before each policy expires is a good rule of thumb. That window gives you time to review whether coverage still matches your business — revenue, payroll, vehicles, and equipment all drift over a year — and to request competing quotes if premiums have climbed. It also keeps you ahead of cancellation notice periods, which often require 30 or 60 days' written notice. Waiting until the renewal packet arrives usually means accepting whatever terms are offered.
Can I use this template for personal insurance?
Absolutely. The columns work just as well for auto, homeowners, renters, umbrella, life, and pet policies as they do for business coverage — just put the family member in the named insured column. Tracking personal policies in one place makes it easy to spot overlapping coverage, compare premiums year over year, and avoid the auto-renewal surprises that come from never seeing all your renewal dates side by side. Delete the sample business rows and start typing.
How do I track multiple insurance policies?
Give each policy its own row in the template and sort the sheet by expiration date so the next renewal is always at the top. Review the sheet on a regular schedule — monthly works for most businesses — and use the renewal preparation date column to mark when you should start shopping or contacting your broker. If the list keeps growing or several people need visibility, a tool like DocuDue shows every policy's status automatically and emails reminders before each renewal.
Can DocuDue replace an insurance renewal spreadsheet?
For tracking and reminders, yes. Add each policy with its expiration date and any notes, and DocuDue keeps them organized on one dashboard with a live status for each — current, due soon, or overdue — plus email reminders on the schedule you choose. Unlike a spreadsheet, nobody has to remember to open it. DocuDue doesn't negotiate renewals or contact carriers for you; it reminds you before the date arrives. The free plan covers up to five policies.
